Had the exact same problem with upgraded version of Office 2003 to2007.Tried this and, amazingly, works like charm! Thanks!
Welcome, nice to see your comment
Thank You!! This worked great on the two computers in my office with this problem. Appreciate the tip!
The answer is simple. Find all XLSTART foldres and delete or move all files out of there. Once you've done that, excel should launch effortlessly.

Thank You!!! I've been looking for this all day long!
My problem was exactly the same, and the solution works!
Incredible, Thx.
Your solution work like a charm. It works better than adding the %1 parameter. I tried the %1 solution before and it worked for a short period of time and not as simple as adding an addin from Excel 2007. Thanks for the great tip!
Thank you so much. It works great.
Worked Great!
Good Tip.. Was really a pain before this change. This has greatly improved things. Many Thanks.
Tried the other option first (removing files from XLSTART folder) and it had no effect.
Added the lookup addin and I can double click open xls files now!!
THANKS!!
You are god...thanks a ton for the solution....

Worked perfectly!
I just applied this "fix" to 30 computers which were upgraded from 2003 to 2007 and it fixed every one of them. I looked like a genius.
Thank you so much for this. Great solution!
The add-in fix worked great here with one of our users slow opening excel problem! Great fix! Now we have a quick wo for this amazingly annoying problem... :-)

This has solved our issue after installation, thanks! Has anyone figured out how to include the add-in during the installation process for Office 2007 so each desktop doesn't have to be touched to turn it on? I can find no way to adjust the setting in the Office Customization Tool?
Also upgraded from Office 2003 to 2007 - This fixed my issue too.
My problem was defined as:
When double clicking on an .xls or .xlsx file I waited for 1 minute and a few seconds. Your fix has been applied and the now open in less then 10 seconds.

Additionally, I was able to open excel and do file open or drag&drop and they were able to open quickly that way but they didnt open immediately if the actual file was double clicked.
I was very annoyed with the same problem. Installing the add-in worked like a charm for me! Thank you for the awesome tip!!!!
Thanks for your tips, I had faced this problem and solved because of you
Hi, I have tried adding add in and it worked fine for 2 weeks. After that user again got the same issue even add in is enabled.
Anyone has any ides? Please help.
Let me join this crowd of happy Excel users who want to thank you for your advice :-D
Thank you very much.. this was a headache for me for so long.. boss and staff members scolding regarding the problem.. now it work fine..
Oh man! That's really odd, but it works also for me!
Do you work for Microsoft? How come you found this out!? That's really the weirdest solution i've ever seen for a performance problem. Install another component, make it heavier and it will run better ....hahahahahah!
Things that only MS will do for you..
For me both solutions worked well: install add-in or delete everything in map %appdata%\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
thank u may GOD bless U it helped me to dave my reputation in my office
Thanks, it opens now in 6 seconds, compared to 1-3 minutes
still slow
is there another way ?
Thanks it's working
my file open in within 1 minute which taking 3 to 6 Minutes
before do this changes.
Great
Solution.
